Bhutan Textiles The ART OF WEAVING is held in high esteem in BHUTAN. When judging the quality of a particular weaver's work, enthusiasts study the tightness of the ground weave, the delicacy of the supplementary weft or warp patterns, the ingenuity of motifs, colors and design combinations. Bhutanese weavers use cotton, silk or wool to create their stunning and vivid tapestries. But Bhutanese weavers are best known for brocade patterning and the floating warp technique. In the former, designs are woven into the ground with either the supplementary weft or the supplementary warp technique. In the hands of a skilled weaver, the floating warp technique results in exquisite patterns in the front of the fabric. The cultural significance of weaving in everyday Bhutanese life and society is huge. Apart for the clothing needs of the family handwoven fabrics are also given as gifts on special occasions such as marriages and government job promotions. The handwoven fabrics are also traded in the same way as gold, land or stocks and bonds. Families pass down exquisite old pieces to successive generations as heirlooms and keepsakes that can be traded in times of economic hardship or preserved as sound investments for the future. The traditional dyes used in Bhutan include natural base colors drawn from the leaves of the Zhim tree, the red lac dye and the Assam indigo.
